Atomic Typewriter protype has taken over · Thursday March 15, 2007 by R. S. Doiel

Well the Atomic Typewriter prototype has taken over as my primary blogging tool. I use Textpattern’s classTextile.php for formatting but the prototype is much, much simpler and minimal then text pattern. Soon I’ll need to see about exporting my content into the typewriter.

I am doing a project for a literature course I am taking and I am using the Atomic Typewriter so I guess I am getting close to making the switch formal. Textpattern is wonderful but I really enjoy small, lightweight and flexible.

Atomic Typewriter conversion not quite there yet · Tuesday November 14, 2006 by R. S. Doiel

We I’m still working on the atomic typewriter conversion. I did get weirdpolymer.net and atomictypewriter.org/doiel.org under Subversion control so I can work on them off line and keep everything synced. That’s a big step in the right direction. I need to implement the server API for Atomic Typewriter before I do the final conversion I think. That’s because I want to redo the UI as it is already unwieldy in the prototype code. Atom validation has stopped because of the link reference for self and a that I need a CDATA wrapper around the some field or other. That’s on the to do list.

Transitioning to a the Atomic Typewriter · Friday November 10, 2006 by R. S. Doiel

My experiments in implementing a prototype of the Atomic Typewriter have been successful. I think I will move in that direction for continued blogging.

Two things remain for me to figure out before I proceed with the transition.

  1. How to send content from the Atomic Typewriter to my Textpattern instance, the journal at Last.fm and possible to Google Docs
  2. How to bring in content from a feed and capture all that the material.

Typing the typewriter · Friday October 27, 2006 by R. S. Doiel

I am working on a prototype journal tool for my other site doiel.org. Its a very simple tool to manage Textile markup files and their tags. The tags drive what is on the home page. Eventually I’ll probably migrate this blog there. Considering that I’ve had this blog for over a year and only one comment I don’t think I need something as heavey weight as Textpattern (which I love). We’ll see. There are so many things nice about Textpattern I may find it hard to leave … in the mean time I’ll keep thinking about my Atomic Journal/Atomic Royal Typewriter.

Oddodd is evolving too, part of why I created the Atomic Journal prototype was to explore some UI and article management. Oddodd seems bigger then Atomic Journal. Oddodd will managemore then just journal entries. Oddodd should mange any odd object I can think to throw at it. That’s what makes its odd. Atomic Journal might also merge in with Oddodd or it might stay separate. We’ll see.

Rob turned me on to this wired article about very fun short short stories. We just read an Atwood book in a class I am taking. I like her shorter stories –

Bush can be weird and candid sometimes · Thursday October 26, 2006 by R. S. Doiel

I was reading the O’Reilly radar and they linked to this article. It doesn’t surprise me that the president would use google. What surprised me were his reasons for not using email. In light of the unanswered email pleas during Katrina I wonder if his position on avoiding information requests by avoiding email filters down into the lower levels of his political appointments. I think administrators forget they set the tone for an organization, even political administrators. Bad habits tend to get emulated …

Then there was lhl’s link to the daily show. It remind me again that humor is our most effective of weapons …

Phiz thoughts and other Odd odd things · Sunday October 22, 2006 by R. S. Doiel

Tagged: code, oddodd, phiz

I’ve started thinking about Phiz again and started prototyping something I am calling Oddodd. Last Spring I never did take the time to solve my bug with recursively included content in Phiz, just got tired out and my hands were pretty bad by then. I’ve used xml_parse_to_struct() allot recently and think it would be a better approach then the one I took for the initial implementation of Phiz. It’ll make things so much simpler to use the two arrays resulting from the xml_parse_to_struct() function then the complex data structure I created in my initial verison. I’ve also been playing with TextilePHP with my Oddod prototype. While I’ve enjoyed the stability and flexibility of Textpattern I really want something far lighter hince this Oddodd prototype. Some of the things have come to my attention since I first started playing with Phiz and now that I am playing with Oddodd.

I see Oddodd as a simple object management system, it stores things. Oddodd needs to support adding content (object), modifing the content (replacing it), and deleting content. It should talk to Subversion for actual content storage. Subversion can then be used for versioning and synchronization. Oddodd needs to generate feeds from what is stored.

Most feeds I want to generate from that content fall into several categories –

  1. Date and Time Added/Changed/Published
  2. Type of object Added/Changed/Published
  3. Title (name) of object
  4. Author (creator) of object
  5. How the object is tag.

The last is the only one that really needs to have a database driving it, so using something like SQLite for storage might make more sense then using something like MySQL to generate the feed filtering.

Web Summit Podcasts · Friday October 13, 2006 by R. S. Doiel

There is a nice set of podcast dealing with Web 2.0 issues and approaches over at Carson Workshops from Summit earlier this year. Lots of nice stuff to think about.

Tom Coates talk I think was most complete for the area I dabble in.

The talk by Ryan Carson adds a sense of what the costs of projects are from the point of view of someone starting a business.

The panel questions at the end are good as well. Sure hope they put next years conference up as a podcast. I am sure my employer would not pay for me attending in London in February 2006 so the podcast is the next best thing for me.

Here’s a link to SubEtha notes that were taken.

Spring, Summer came and went · Thursday October 5, 2006 by R. S. Doiel

Tagged: grad_school

I’m back at the blog. Carpal Tunnel did me in for a bit, then Summer kept me distracted and now I’m back at this poor excuse for brain echo. Since Spring I investigated, applied, was accepted and now have started graduate school at Mount Saint Mary’s College in Los Angeles. Coming from Engineering School at USC which is predominantly male and attending grad school at what was a Women’s College (still is a Women’s College for Undergraduate) has been full of refreshing surprises and insights. In short I am enjoying my return to the field of Humanities after my adventure in Computer Science and Engineering. Not sure this will accelerate my posting to this blog but it hopefully will improve my writing!
